Ships Started Here - Liverpool NS

During the nineteenth century, Liverpool became a major seaport as the fishing and ship building industries grew. Logs were floated down the Mersey River for export as well as the wooden ship building - a thriving industry into the early 20th century, until the introduction of steel ship making.

Liverpool was seriously effected by this change in technology and virtually slipped into an economic slump.

Now today, although Liverpool is no longer a ship building port it's deep sea port, although small, has an enormous shipyard on its shore - on Corvette Street - and a long forgotten history of shipbuilding. This street was named such due to the number of 'Corvette Ships' that were built here. A corvette is a small, maneuverable, lightly armed warship, usually smaller than a frigate (2000+ tons) yet smaller than a coastal patrol craft. Built during the Age of Sail they usually had a single gun deck that grew into much more as the length of the ship increased. The early role of the corvette was primarily of coastal patrol - protecting the shores, fighting minor wars and supporting large fleets.

WWI ships not mentioned above, built in Liverpool and part of the Emergency Ship Building  for the first World War:
In 1914 the 280 tonnes salvage vessel "Deliverance" was built in Liverpool. Following that, in 1918 was the construction of the cargo ship "War Halifax" 2,335 tonnes which was built for the company hipping Controller. It was burnt off Cardiff in 1919 and hulked.

Recently with its new Director, Linda Jackson, the centre has taken on new life, by putting together a line-up of entertainment and experiences for all ages. No longer is it just a museum. Now it is a place for artists to display their art, a place for performers to entertain, a place to celebrate a special event in elegance and style and a place to bring the family.

Queens Hospital Expansion - Breaks Ground

Construction of the Queens General Health Project to begin

 

Offical hosital expansion to begin as soon as this month as Premier Darrell Dexter joined with South Shore Health President and CEO, Dr Peter Vaughan and Board Chair Roxie Smith to put the shovel in the ground for the construction of the Queens General Health Project.

“Today is a significant milestone in what is a tremendous community effort,” said Dr Peter Vaughan, President and CEO of South Shore Health. “After years of planning and a clear commitment from the community, the region and the province, construction is beginning on a project that will deliver quality health care to this area for many years to come.”

The Queens General Health project will upgrade and modernize the hospital’s existing 22 bed medical unit and build a new collaborative healthcare facility. The medical unit construction will include private washrooms for every patient, technological and structural improvements to provide for quality patient care, and quiet spaces for patients and families. With a collaborative healthcare centre on site, Queens will offer a new approach to family practice with doctors, nurses, and other healthcare providers working together under one roof to deliver services to the sick, promote preventative healthcare, and manage chronic illnesses. Completion of the project is scheduled for the end of 2013.

“This government has shown its commitment to ensuring Nova Scotians have access to the care they need, when and where they need it,” said Premier Darrell Dexter. “The Queens General Hospital has tremendous community support, and today marks another significant step forward in bringing Queens area residents better access to quality primary care.”

In addition to enhancing the quality of care offered to the residents of Queens this project will also provide a positive environment for teaching health care professionals and create new opportunities to host medical, nursing and other health professional students.

This project has been made possible with the generous support of the community, the Queens General Hospital Foundation, the many donors to the 'Keeping Us Strong' fundraising campaign, the Region of Queens Municipality, and the Government of Nova Scotia.

Last evening, elegance swept through the halls of Rossignol Centre, of Liverpool NS, that will long be remembered by those who attended.  The audience was entertained by Jack Wynters’ recital of Robert Service’s most popular poetry, in the magnificent English Room; Judy Cleveland in lovely music and song in the Rossignol Hall and, lastly but not least, Bobby Curtola in the Art Gallery hosting the Fashion Show; where ladies presented an amazing line of clothing from Debbie Noel’s fashion shop, Liverpool. The evening closed with Bobby Curtola singing a number of his ‘gold record’ songs; songs to sing along with or just drift along on a wave of memories.

Rossignol Cultural Centre has taken on new life with its new director, Linda Jackson, and this event is just the first of many that will open the Centre to events surrounding and promoting arts and culture.
